Church

Sorry, no icebergs yet...

I came across this the other day and I wanted to share it. In my opinion it's a great definition of church that's not commonly understood. So enjoy!

Cardboard Testimonies

My mom sent me the link to this video the other day. I definitely recommend anyone who loves the Lord to check it out. The conclusion - God changes lives and we need to talk about it.

Enjoy!

Something That Caught My Eye

Heather suggested I take a look at this website. I read this page first and could really relate to what the author is saying. I believe the idea of living more simply is VERY important in our lives and should be a priority. There are too many spoiled kids out there; I see them every week at youth group, church, and skating. A lot of these kids know they're spoiled but don't know anything different. It's sad really and I think that I partly why I don't want to raise kids in North America...I want to move far away to a country with much less materially but much more spiritually and raise my kids in that environment. I am not satisfied with 'our' culture and the way of life that's expected. It's especially bad in the church which drives me crazy. You would think that people who love Jesus would want to live like him, would value simplicity and love and hate material things.

Our church has a goal to buy a bus for an orphanage in Senegal during the month of April. The bus costs $15,000, this is the cost of a new skidoo - something that at least a few families got this winter. A
snowmobile is a pleasure vehicle (at least here). You spend the day driving around really fast, burning gas (not very environmentally friendly), and often putting yourself and others in danger (there have been many accidents this winter). I know this is not the case for everyone and some people actually use them to check their trap lines or get caribou, that's different so you don't have to get mad at me! You would think in a town where there are probably more snowmobiles than people and according to the 2006 census the average family income is $89,955 a good sized church could raise enough money to buy a bus for an orphanage over seas so that the Word of God can be spread even further. We will see though, we will see.

Strolling: A Skill Every Teen Should Have
By John O. Andersen
January 26, 2009

Power walking is so corporate. Fitness walking is so selfish.

Strolling is the wiser choice.

Strolling is exercise, but infinitely more than that.

When you're good at strolling, it can not only be exercise, but more importantly, one of the finest forms of educational entertainment imaginable.

Strolling is a window to the wonders of botany, birdwatching, architecture, horticulture, geology, local history, meteorology, art, even sociology--to name a few.

A window?

Yes, because when you manage to slow down long enough to pause, listen, and focus, the wonders of the outdoor world can come to you in ways you may have never thought possible.

Strolling is a deliciously subversive undertaking in a culture overwhelmingly biased in favor of speed.

The trick is to find the time to regularly stroll, and then expand your strolling skills to actually become a master.

For many, Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the perfect stroll time. But there are many other moments during the week when strolling works quite well. Even if you work long or odd hours, there is always an opportunity to stroll.

If you're strolling more than 1 1/2 miles in an hour, you're not strolling. Ideally, 1 mile per hour leaves ample time to study a work of art, have a twenty minute chat with a local, or stop at a cafe for a bowl of hot soup.

Two to three hours at that pace is the basis of a perfect stroll. In that time frame you could easily start thinking you were on vacation.

For certain, once you set aside regular time to stroll, and actually get quite skilled at it, strolling will become an irresistible passion.

Sure, strolling imposes few if any financial demands. However, be forewarned there are very stringent demands to achieve the ideal state of mind for successful strolling.

You can't be in a hurry. Cell phones are out of place. Short attention spans are not acceptable. Apathy is a deal breaker.

Master strollers have eyes that examine closely, feet that aren't in a hurry to move on, brains brimming full of curiosity, mouths that don't have to be open all of time, but ask probing questions, fingers that enjoy the feel of unique finds, and ears that work best when pealed for unexpected sounds.

Strolling is truly an indispensable skill; one best acquired in youth, and regularly honed throughout life.

Early Mornings

Sunrise over the lake.Pastor Elaine has been doing a sermon series called 'Lead Me On'. She is an awesome preacher at normal times but for this series God has been really speaking through her in powerful ways - at least to me. I missed her sermon two Sundays ago because I was in childrens church but we have the recording ordered because Tim said it was so awesome. This past Sunday night she preached on sacrificing and doing. I know that some of you out there who come from a similar background as me are skeptical of female pastors because of the legalism that is in some churches relating to females in leadership roles in the church. You need to read your bible in context and take that up with God, I'm not going to discuss this topic here.

So Pastor Elaine was preaching away in her passionate manner and God was speaking to me. I had been worried about this week since Tuesday (yesterday) was my last day of work and I was afraid that I was going to fall into the depression that I often feel when I am between jobs. Basically a feeling hopelessness and like I have a wasted degree that I'm never going to use. It's really easy for me to fall into that and get down and end up moping around and not doing anything. It's really hard on Tim too. I was also sad to be leaving my job because I have loved this job and it has been really rewarding.

At the end of her sermon she asked everyone to seek God and find out what he was telling us about sacrifice. Can you sacrifice your time to help someone out? Your money, your possessions, your pride, your income, your tv shows...anything really. After that to seek what we're going to do about it. Will we tutor lower income family's kids for free? Will we volunteer in the community? Will we donate to charity? Will we be a welcoming group where others who are a little different from us feel comfortable hanging out with us? Will we visit the lonely? Will we stick up for Jesus at work? Will we follow God's leading to a lesser paying job so that we can share about Jesus in that place? There's really no limit to what we could do, the only limit is our creativity.

So as I was praying about this I really felt challenged in the doing area. I felt that God said to me it is a sacrifice for me to be living here, away from family and friends in a unfriendly climate, but that he brought me here to DO. It's so easy for me to stay at home and play Batman Lego (on PS2 ... not with lego blocks...) with Tim rather than visit our friends who we know are lonely. It's easy for me to sleep in the morning rather then get up and seek God's will for my day. It's so easy to say 'thanks' when someone complements something I have, rather then saying 'why don't you take it'. It's so easy to hang out with the church young adults that are part of the 'popular crowd' rather than hang out with those who don't really fit the mould. It's so easy to bake muffins and bread for myself rather than give it away.

When Tim came down from the drums we went to our favourite coffee shop...the only coffee shop - Tim Hortons - and had a chat about what God was speaking to us on this topic. We both really felt that God was challenging us more in the DO area than in the SACRIFICE area - but for one thing. (I have been challenged on this more than once in my life) That this is sleep. I love my sleep, I really do. I can go to bed at 11 and wake up at 9 and not feel like I slept too much. I can have a nap in the afternoon and not feel guilty. When I was working at 9 am I would get up at 8 (or later if I felt I didn't need a shower!), Tim was long gone to work by this time, he leaves at 7. When he kisses me goodbye I am normally semi conscious for 10 seconds and then back asleep.

So, we felt that God was calling us to something more. He was challenging us to wake up, seek him and pray and read the word, before Tim went to work. This, my friends, is a huge sacrifice for me. Getting out of my warm bed at 5:30 in the morning when I didn't have to work until 9...or not at all? Man oh man... we both thought it was impossible for me.

But we were willing to give it our best effort. We went to bed around 10:30 Sunday night, set our alarms for 5:15 and prayed that God would supernaturally wake me up enough to concentrate and function and reflect on Him. Monday morning came and it was successful! I woke up - I was actually awake! It was wonderful to be up with Tim before work and eat breakfast together. We decided to follow one of the Bible reading plans in his bible and to focus our prayers on certain topics (and of course what ever God laid on our hearts). I had the energy to update my blog and do my workout before work! I felt great. We were out Monday night late and didn't get to bed until midnight...Tuesday morning I was semi awake and crashed as soon as Tim got up from the sofa to get brakfast. I slept until I had to get up for work. Tuesday night we went to bed at a reasonable hour and prayed for help again. That brings us to this morning. We were up by 6 and down on the sofa with the Bible in hand. Praise the Lord! We ate together and Tim went to work. I've been on the computer since and soon I think I will do my workout! So far so good (for the most part).

It's definitely hard for me but it's so nice to have a time together that's not going to be interrupted by anyone or anything. Time that we can just focus on God and grow in our relationships with Him. Tim has even gotten to share with one of his co-workers about it already. Pray for us, especially me, in this because it's so imporant. The times I've been closest to God is when I have taken regular quiet times (while being a missionary for the most part) and it so makes a difference in my everyday life. I want to be a missionary here but I need to take that time with God so I can know his heart for this place.

I honestly can't believe it's only 8:30 right now! Awesome! And if you want to listen to some interesting CBC radio then turn it on at 5:30...

Valentine's Day

I had an especially wonderful Valentine's day this year.

But first... When I was younger I hated V-day, mostly because I never had anyone to do anything special for me. For me it was a day of sadness and loneliness. When I got a bit older I became more cynical; thinking that it was a day created by Hallmark to boost sales during the traditional mid-winter frugality of consumers.

Now that I have someone to love and someone to love me I am a little more in support of this day. However; it's not only a day for lovers, it's a day for friends and for telling people that God showed us the ultimate act of love by giving us salvation through Jesus. Check out this awesome Valentine idea at Kate's Kitchen.

Even though I like the day now, I don't want to put ridicules expectations on Tim to do something fantastic for me (and then me having to think of something for him as well). He knows I don't want roses (way too expensive and they just die...) or fancy meals out (we don't have $100 to spend on one meal for two, what a waste). So what did he do?

I worked on Saturday from 9-12 and then 1-4. During my lunch break I taught skating. So I didn't see him much. My afternoon was spent with 10 kids running around the library participating in my "Valentine's Cyber Scavenger Hunt". It was a lot of fun and a great success! After work I dropped into the local Blush store and picked up a little something and went home. When I got home Tim had cleaned everything, all the dishes were done and everything! He was busy in the kitchen so I went up stairs and cleaned up a bit (myself and my pile of clothes that had accumulated on the floor in our bedroom). He called me down for supper and had prepared a candle lit feast of Chicken Cordon Bleu with mashed potatoes garnished with fresh parsley (from our potted parsley) and fresh green beans. It was absolutely delicious. I didn't take a picture because I didn't want to ruin the moment. He had even made maple sponge cake with vanilla frozen yogurt for dessert. I was really impressed! I have been making most of the meals lately because of my work schedule and it was so nice to have a break and eat something delicious.

We then had a time of prayer, a really powerful time where God really spoke some things into our lives. It was really refreshing.

And that is where I will stop... even though the evening didn't end there!

I am so happy that God provided me with such an awesome guy, honestly I had my doubts that guys like this even existed when I was younger. I am so glad I waited for the perfect one for me. Papa's plan is the ultimate and definitely worth waiting for!

Now it's your turn, did you do anything special for Valentine's Day?
