Early Mornings

Sunrise over the lake.Pastor Elaine has been doing a sermon series called 'Lead Me On'. She is an awesome preacher at normal times but for this series God has been really speaking through her in powerful ways - at least to me. I missed her sermon two Sundays ago because I was in childrens church but we have the recording ordered because Tim said it was so awesome. This past Sunday night she preached on sacrificing and doing. I know that some of you out there who come from a similar background as me are skeptical of female pastors because of the legalism that is in some churches relating to females in leadership roles in the church. You need to read your bible in context and take that up with God, I'm not going to discuss this topic here.

So Pastor Elaine was preaching away in her passionate manner and God was speaking to me. I had been worried about this week since Tuesday (yesterday) was my last day of work and I was afraid that I was going to fall into the depression that I often feel when I am between jobs. Basically a feeling hopelessness and like I have a wasted degree that I'm never going to use. It's really easy for me to fall into that and get down and end up moping around and not doing anything. It's really hard on Tim too. I was also sad to be leaving my job because I have loved this job and it has been really rewarding.

At the end of her sermon she asked everyone to seek God and find out what he was telling us about sacrifice. Can you sacrifice your time to help someone out? Your money, your possessions, your pride, your income, your tv shows...anything really. After that to seek what we're going to do about it. Will we tutor lower income family's kids for free? Will we volunteer in the community? Will we donate to charity? Will we be a welcoming group where others who are a little different from us feel comfortable hanging out with us? Will we visit the lonely? Will we stick up for Jesus at work? Will we follow God's leading to a lesser paying job so that we can share about Jesus in that place? There's really no limit to what we could do, the only limit is our creativity.

So as I was praying about this I really felt challenged in the doing area. I felt that God said to me it is a sacrifice for me to be living here, away from family and friends in a unfriendly climate, but that he brought me here to DO. It's so easy for me to stay at home and play Batman Lego (on PS2 ... not with lego blocks...) with Tim rather than visit our friends who we know are lonely. It's easy for me to sleep in the morning rather then get up and seek God's will for my day. It's so easy to say 'thanks' when someone complements something I have, rather then saying 'why don't you take it'. It's so easy to hang out with the church young adults that are part of the 'popular crowd' rather than hang out with those who don't really fit the mould. It's so easy to bake muffins and bread for myself rather than give it away.

When Tim came down from the drums we went to our favourite coffee shop...the only coffee shop - Tim Hortons - and had a chat about what God was speaking to us on this topic. We both really felt that God was challenging us more in the DO area than in the SACRIFICE area - but for one thing. (I have been challenged on this more than once in my life) That this is sleep. I love my sleep, I really do. I can go to bed at 11 and wake up at 9 and not feel like I slept too much. I can have a nap in the afternoon and not feel guilty. When I was working at 9 am I would get up at 8 (or later if I felt I didn't need a shower!), Tim was long gone to work by this time, he leaves at 7. When he kisses me goodbye I am normally semi conscious for 10 seconds and then back asleep.

So, we felt that God was calling us to something more. He was challenging us to wake up, seek him and pray and read the word, before Tim went to work. This, my friends, is a huge sacrifice for me. Getting out of my warm bed at 5:30 in the morning when I didn't have to work until 9...or not at all? Man oh man... we both thought it was impossible for me.

But we were willing to give it our best effort. We went to bed around 10:30 Sunday night, set our alarms for 5:15 and prayed that God would supernaturally wake me up enough to concentrate and function and reflect on Him. Monday morning came and it was successful! I woke up - I was actually awake! It was wonderful to be up with Tim before work and eat breakfast together. We decided to follow one of the Bible reading plans in his bible and to focus our prayers on certain topics (and of course what ever God laid on our hearts). I had the energy to update my blog and do my workout before work! I felt great. We were out Monday night late and didn't get to bed until midnight...Tuesday morning I was semi awake and crashed as soon as Tim got up from the sofa to get brakfast. I slept until I had to get up for work. Tuesday night we went to bed at a reasonable hour and prayed for help again. That brings us to this morning. We were up by 6 and down on the sofa with the Bible in hand. Praise the Lord! We ate together and Tim went to work. I've been on the computer since and soon I think I will do my workout! So far so good (for the most part).

It's definitely hard for me but it's so nice to have a time together that's not going to be interrupted by anyone or anything. Time that we can just focus on God and grow in our relationships with Him. Tim has even gotten to share with one of his co-workers about it already. Pray for us, especially me, in this because it's so imporant. The times I've been closest to God is when I have taken regular quiet times (while being a missionary for the most part) and it so makes a difference in my everyday life. I want to be a missionary here but I need to take that time with God so I can know his heart for this place.

I honestly can't believe it's only 8:30 right now! Awesome! And if you want to listen to some interesting CBC radio then turn it on at 5:30...

A few more "house wifey" things

I was busy this weekend with a few things. Here are some pictures.

A friend for stuffy puppyHe was actually a gift for our friends little 2 year old as it was her birthday on Saturday. I even knit him a scarf to stay warm!
Some home made pizza pockets for Tim's lunches. Here's the recipe.

I made a double batch which yielded about 30 pockets. The only alteration I made was sealing with water first and then folding and pressing with a fork. It was fun, and now Tim has a whole bunch of lunches so I don't have to wonder if he's only eating peanut butter and crackers for lunch.

The pockets are stored in this new addition to our house:
No not Tim's stomach - though that is their destination. This deep freeze. Out immediate neighbour was selling it (we share a wall with them) and gave it to us for $75, free delivery (meaning he and Tim carried up from their basement out the door across our step that we share through our door and down into our basemsnt). It's great because I can now get stuff like hamburger buns on sale and throw them in the freezer. I even made a double batch of Mom's raisin bran muffins the other day and froze most of them. Definitely worth the money! Now we have lots of fresh muffins and they taste just as good as when they were first baked if you just let them thaw on their own. I am also planning on making a bunch of bread and popping it in here since I will have lots of time since my job ends tomorrow:(

My next post will be on why I am up so early blogging!

Moose

I ate Moose the other day, it was delicious! I actually thought it was roast beef until I tasted it. I think I love wild meat. I also tried ptarmigan (silent 'p'), that was really good too. I'm not about to go and get one myself but I will eat what others have cleaned and cooked!

For all you crafters out there!

I love making crafts! I got this idea after reading this entry in Kate's Kitchen (yes, her again!). I am currently working at the public library and we have a small table with colouring sheets on it for kids. It's great because it keeps the kids occupied while their parent's are browsing the books. The crayons were looking pretty ratty so I decided to try Kate's craft using recycled crayons. It was fun, a little messy and had great results! I will definitely do this again if I come across some broken crayons!

First peal and sort the crayons into colours.
Since there is no recycling here other than refundables I used tin cans from beans and things like that to melt the wax. Then I could just throw them out and I didn't have to try to clean the wax out of some of my baking dishes. I placed the cans directly on the burner and turned it on low.I stirred them with butter knives and the end of the wooden spoon.
I sprayed the trays with Pam (the first ones I didn't and it was really tough to get the crayons out). When the crayons were melted I poured them into ice cube trays with various shapes.
This was the final product!I think the librarian will be pleasently surprised! It's fun colouring with fruit, sea shells, and flowers!

I also made this little guy the other night out of work gloves. I got the pattern off of the Martha Stewart website. I'm sure the second one I make will be better, this one is a little rough around the edges and he's always looking over his left shoulder, but I still think he's cute!

The Talk of Spring

I listen to CBC radio a lot...(dad, it's so I can torture my kids on long drives some day like you did to us!). Lately they have been talking about spring, gardening, crocuses...things like that. Then I step outside and this is what I see:
And this:
This is the front of our house:I guess I should be thankful, everyone has said that we've had less snow then normal. The whole front window is normally covered, not just half. Since these photos were taken we've had a snowstorm (it started last night and is still going) so we have a bit more snow now.

To pass the time we do this:

and drink this:
Just to let everyone know, I won this game and the game we played after. And it's all because I stole the white pieces from Louell. I love the white pieces!

Thank you Argentina for Mate, Thank you Klaus Teuber for Catan, and Thank you God (in advance) for hopefully bringing spring!

Mistints

We decided it was time to finally bring some colour into our lives. After living in an all white house for almost a year it was time. We've collected a good bit of paint from the dump and our plan was to mix until we got the colours we wanted. We are still going to do this but we didn't have anything to make a nice orange for the kitchen. The fabric I have for the curtains (no they are not yet made...I had to return the sewing machine I borrowed and the one that was given me by my Lab City mom Bonnie, kicked the bucket - it was originally from a yard sale anyway) has these beautiful burnt orange flowers on it. So I went to Home Hardware to check out the mistints. Looking for mistints is the perfect way to save money on paint (which is quite expensive). These are basically reject paints that were mixed wrong and sold at a fraction of the price. My friend Kandice told me about them, thanks!

So I went to check out the mistints and they had the perfect colour of orange! I was just looking to find some to mix but when I held up my sample piece of fabric to the can I was delighted. We picked up a few necessary tools (rollers, paint brushes, tape....etc.) and went home. The only disadvantage is that there's usually only one can of a certain colour and you can't really get another of the same colour. This was Saturday. Sunday is the only day that Tim and I both have off at the same time and it's normally filled with church in the morning and evening and reading in the afternoon. We woke up late and decided to skip morning church and spend the day together painting our kitchen. It was wonderful to actually spend time with my husband (I know, I don't even have kids yet) talk, laugh, and work on our house together. Here are some photos for your enjoyment!

Me painting above the door to the livingroom. (I'm glad we're both tall)

Last attempt at life

This is the only result I have received from the pumpkin seed I planted at Halloween. It had already sprouted inside the pumpkin so I thought I would try growing it. It was doing well for a while and produced this beautiful flower but soon after shriveled up and died. I guess this was its last attempt to survive.
